Description:
Ancient Roman Two-layer layered agate known as a NIcola. On this oval shape intaglio, two vultures are mauling a hare lying on an altar. In Ancient civilizations Vultures symbolize purity, motherhood,death, rebirth, patience, protection and, new beginnings. Vultures were also depicted as messengers of the gods, ferrying dead souls to the afterlife. Tiny fragments are missing due to the age of the intaglio.The intaglio dates to 2nd century AD.
The intaglio is referred to as a Nicola, black and blue agate.
